Accessibility
Our commitment to ensuring bankersmagazine.com is accessible to all readers, including those with disabilities.
At The Bankers’ Magazine we aim to provide an accessible website for all our readers, including those who are older and who have disabilities. We are committed to conforming to level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility.
WCAG 2.2 provides criteria to make websites more accessible to people with disabilities across four principles: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust. We take our responsibilities in this area seriously and maintain continued efforts to improve accessibility across all pages of the site. If you have any questions or feedback, please contact us.
User Testing
This site has been designed and tested to be accessible to people using keyboard-only navigation, screen reader access on both desktop and mobile devices, screen magnification, and high-contrast mode.
We conduct ongoing user testing with individuals who are deaf, blind, colour blind, dyslexic, have low vision, are mobility impaired, or have a learning difficulty. Feedback from these sessions directly informs our accessibility improvements.
Known Limitations
We strive for full WCAG 2.2 AA conformance across all pages. The following areas are undergoing active improvement:
| Feature | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Article pages | Conforms | Semantic HTML, skip links, full keyboard navigation, ARIA labels throughout. |
| Data charts (Highcharts) | Conforms | Highcharts accessibility module loaded on all chart pages. Each chart includes a title, caption, and full text description. Keyboard navigation enabled. Alternative data tables available. |
| Intelligence briefing | Conforms | Proper heading hierarchy (H1–H3), landmark regions, semantic section elements with ARIA labels. |
| Cookie management | Partial | The cookie preference panel is powered by a third-party tool and currently has limited accessibility. We are working to improve this. |
| Archive search | Partial | Full-text search of the historical archive is under development. Current limitations will be addressed ahead of the archive launch. |
Charts and Data Visualisations
All quantitative content on this site is visualised using Highcharts, which is loaded with its accessibility module on every page that contains a chart. Every chart includes a descriptive title, a caption identifying the source of the underlying data, and a full plain-English accessibility.description for screen reader users.
Charts are keyboard-navigable: users may tab to any chart and navigate between data points using the arrow keys. Where colour alone might otherwise distinguish data series, we additionally use different line dash styles and marker symbols to ensure the information is perceivable without colour vision.
Video Transcriptions and Subtitles
Where video content is published on this site, we aim to provide closed captions (CC) for all new material. Some older videos may not yet carry this functionality; we are working to add captions retrospectively. If a video presents a significant barrier to you, please contact us and we will prioritise a transcript.
There may be a delay between a video being published and the availability of its transcript and closed captions while the transcript is prepared. Videos that contain no speech will not carry a transcript.
Podcast and Audio Transcriptions
We are committed to providing transcripts for all audio content published on this site. We are currently reviewing third-party transcription services to identify the most accurate and timely solution for our readers. Transcripts will be published alongside audio files as they become available. If this causes any inconvenience, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Alternative Text for Images
The Bankers’ Magazine is working with generative AI tools to improve the quality of alternative (alt) text provided for users of screen readers. Any AI-generated alt text is reviewed by an editor prior to publication to verify accuracy and editorial appropriateness. The intention is to improve the quality and richness of alt text on images of editorial significance.
On images that are purely decorative in nature—ornamental rules, section dividers, and similar elements—minimal or empty alt text is provided in accordance with WCAG guidance, and the elements are marked aria-hidden="true" where appropriate.
Technical Measures
The following technical measures have been implemented across the site in support of accessibility:
- A visible skip-to-content link is present on every page.
- All pages use semantic HTML5 landmark elements:
header, nav, main, aside, andfooter. - Heading levels are used in correct hierarchical order (H1–H4) on all pages.
- All interactive elements carry descriptive ARIA labels or visible text labels.
- Focus indicators are visible throughout; keyboard navigation is fully supported.
- Colour contrast ratios meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 AA minimums (4.5:1 for body text, 3:1 for large text and UI components).
- No information is conveyed by colour alone; charts use dash styles and marker symbols in addition to colour.
- Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
